Call for Book Chapters:Indian Knowledge Systems in Schools

The Media Analysis and Research Center is pleased to invite original, unpublished book chapters for an edited volume: Integrating Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) in school curriculum. The volume aims to identify possibilities for pedagogical integration, curriculum innovation, and holistic development with special reference to Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) in schools.

Indian Knowledge Systems is a confusing idea among academicians and researchers. The confusion surrounding the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) often stems from treating it as a monolithic, singular entity. Plurality is the epitome of discourses footed in Indian Knowledge Systems.  The most significant source of confusion is the conflation of IKS with a single philosophical or religious tradition. Ancient Indian thought was characterized by intense debate and plurality. A progressive approach to IKS moves away from mere antiquarianism and focuses on its relevance to modern challenges.

Media Analysis Research Center opens up a critical, historical-materialist reading of IKS. It avoids both uncritical glorification and dismissive rejection. We believe a state-promoted IKS can sometimes be used to impose a selective, high-caste Hindu narrative, erasing contributions from other communities including Muslims, Christians, Jaina, Sikh etc. and indigenous knowledge from tribal communities and other marginalised groups along with local knowledge stes developed from localised experiences.  Conflating myth with science is also one among the confusion generating practices.

A progressive lens would view this as an ideological maneuverer to construct a homogenized national identity. In this context Media Analysis Research Center provides a platform to deliver fundamental research outputs which perceives ancient Indian philosophical and scientific achievements within their specific socio-economic contexts and cautions against anachronistically attributing modern scientific concepts to ancient thinkers, as this ignores the material conditions of their era. The primary objective of the book is to generate a transformative vision for a shift from “India Knowledge Systems” (IKS) to “Plural Knowledge Systems of India” (PKSI) to recognize that Indian knowledge was shaped by cross-communal and cross-border exchanges involving various castes, religions and geographies over centuries.

What would we expect in your paper? What would we expect in your paper?

Conceptual Clarity and Definitional Precision

The paper should clearly define what it means by "Indian Knowledge System(s)" and avoid treating IKS as a monolithic entity. It should distinguish between IKS as a historical corpus, as a contemporary policy category, and as a pedagogical resource

Recognition of Internal Plurality

The paper should acknowledge the diversity of ancient Indian thought — including Āstika and Nāstika schools, materialist traditions such as Cārvāka, Buddhist and Jain contributions, and internal divisions within Vedānta — rather than reducing IKS to a single philosophical or religious tradition.

Historical and Material Contextualization

The paper should situate knowledge claims within their socio-economic and historical conditions of production, avoiding anachronistic attributions of modern scientific concepts to ancient thinkers.

Critical Ideological Awareness

The paper should demonstrate awareness of how IKS is deployed politically and ideologically — including risks of selective appropriation, caste-centrism, or the erasure of minority contributions — without descending into polemic.

Engagement with Contemporary Knowledge Systems (CKS)

The paper should articulate a substantive, non-trivial relationship between IKS and contemporary knowledge systems — addressing epistemological tensions (holistic vs. reductionist, experiential vs. empirical) and proposing respectful bridging methodologies rather than forced equivalence.

Pedagogical Applicability and Innovation

The paper should offer concrete, implementable pedagogical models or strategies for integrating IKS into school practice, with attention to age-appropriateness, learning outcomes, and classroom feasibility.

Alignment with NEP 2020 Vision and Curriculum Design

The paper should demonstrate informed engagement with the National Education Policy's provisions on IKS — including its emphasis on holistic, multidisciplinary, and experiential learning — and translate these into curriculum design principles.

Assessment Strategies for Holistic Learning

The paper should propose assessment approaches consistent with holistic educational principles — moving beyond rote recall toward assessing values, dispositions, experiential learning, and ethical reasoning — and address the measurement challenges involved.

Scholarly Rigour and Evidentiary Standards

The paper should employ credible sources, transparent methodology, and appropriate citation practices. Claims about ancient knowledge should be supported by primary or reputable secondary scholarship rather than popular assertion or myth.

Reflexivity, Equity, and Social Justice Orientation

The paper should reflect on whose knowledge is being centred and whose is marginalized, addressing questions of access, inclusion (including tribal, Dalit, and minority knowledge traditions), and the equitable distribution of pedagogical benefits.
